So....what is new?

Well, it is time to update this blog-it has been nearly a month.  Time has flown by-I've taken pictures along the way; but am spending my evenings working hours on my grad class-the course ends next Monday!  I have learned a lot, but am looking forward to helping Alan with the house as much as I can.  This picture shows the location of the second floor bathroom and our closet.

Alan is standing on the stairway landing and the guest bedroom closet is behind him.  There aren't any windows on the second floor/south side as most of the garage will cover that side of the house.  We are making a temporary "door" on the back of the wall/corner that you are looking at to move our furniture and appliances in!
View of the basement.  Although not seen in this photo, the furnace and the tankless water heater are now installed.  I am amazed at how small the water heater is-I'll update with another photo.
This area will (hopefully) be a wine/bar area.  We had the concrete contractors score large squares into the floor; I would like to stain the concrete in this area at some point.
The stairs will be located on the right side-where you see the ladder.  We have two windows in this area that will eventually be a tv/den room.  The large window faces the east-so it is nice and bright in the morning down in the basement!
On the left side of the photo is an additional stairs for access to the basement.  This will work well for Alan bringing in any supplies he might need.

We decided on poured concrete steps....we thought it would look more original then wood stairs.  We need to add a railing and of course landscaping in spring!
Here is the south side of the house-the open area is now closed in-but will serve as the access point for moving furniture, appliances and blue board for the plastering of the walls upstairs.
Here are the stairs leading down into the basement

Here you can see that Alan has begun to build some walls.  This doorway leads into our closet.  All of the walls for the bedrooms, closets and laundry room are now finished upstairs!
This view shows the wall between our bedroom and the laundry room.
This picture shows the wall between the guest bedroom closet and the laundry room.

On Saturday, Alan and I spent the day insulating the upstairs.  We completed the entire job and saved $800 by completing the work by ourselves.
You can see that most of the guest bedroom is insulated in this picture.
This picture shows our new shower on the left and our closet on the right.

This is a view of the laundry room-the roughed in electricity and the plumbing are completed.
Here is my work table for cutting the insulating into the correct lengths for Alan.  We are set up in the guest bedroom.
Another view of the guest bedroom.
Here is the corner of the guest bedroom closet where we will have access to get large items in the house.
Alan has added a new wall/railing for the second story steps going to the landing.  You can see remnants of the old house/stenciling on the walls!

So....what else?  The electrician needs to work on updating the first floor and the heating needs to be finished on the second floor.  Next, the plastering needs to be completed and insulation needs to be blown in on the second floor.  Tile needs to be installed in the master bathroom and shower.  The floors need to be refinished.  We have selected flooring for the kitchen and the laundry room and that needs to be installed.  Alan will work on the garage this week and we have a TON of painting to do....cabinets, walls and woodwork.  Lots left to do-but the end is in sight!  We love visitors-so please feel free to stop in and say "HI"....I'm always happy to take a break if I am working to show you around :-)!  When are we moving in?  Hmmm.....not quite sure yet......

The Roof is On-Sunday, November 7, 2010

Here is a picture of Alan working on the roof a few weeks ago, along with a picture of the shingles and the shed dormer for the upstairs windows.

This was a busy week at the house, water and sewer lines are now in.  Gas is in and we already had electricity.  This week....sheet the back wall of the house, install the furnace and begin the plumbing!  I love utilities :-)!
A view of the front of the house, you can see that the windows for the upstairs are all installed.  We selected a cranberry colored window-we thought that it would look nice with the brick!  We had originally thought about a shake style shingle for the siding (look towards the left of the window)....but it looks "too heavy".  So, I think we are going with a Khaki color shingle siding (I THINK....:-))!
Just a view of the window for the guest bedroom upstairs.

Either Jeremy or Josh working on nailing roof shingles.  They started at 10:00 this morning and finished this afternoon.  Alan has the ridge vent to complete.  Also, he is going to build a roof over the existing flat roof that used to be the deck porch for the bedroom upstairs....Al is not a fan of the flat room.
Alan walking on the concrete driveway.  Hoffman Brothers completed the driveway and the floor of the garage last week!

Jeremy and Josh working on the roof!

Close up of the floor of the garage.

I worked on organizing the upstairs today.  The wood floor up here will all remain-stained a dark color.  The area that is not wood in the picture will be the guest walk in closet.  Alan will sheet the south wall this week.
Guest bedroom.  You can see the new window that is facing the north and the new window facing the east.  The windows are primed-so painting will be easy (well as easy as painting can be)....
My happy hubby!

Our bedroom, two new windows as well.  I like the deep windowsill of the window that faces the west.  We are keeping the wood floor in here as well.
Our bedroom.....the pile of plastic is where our closet and shower will be; to the left is the bathroom facilities.

Just a view of the steps going downstairs....I like the little landing.  Um, the stenciling will not remain.

Another picture of the front of the house.  Alan removed the wood on most of the front porch-it was in place to keep the porch in place during the move from Dufek Drive to Pine Street.  We will be filling in the brick that was removed above the arch.  We decide on curved concrete steps to approach the porch.  The last step and the remainder of the sidewalk will be poured on Tuesday.  The wood front door will remain (new glass) and a new storm door will be added.  Alan wants to keep the white window box with the little blue birds....I want it to GO.  We'll see who wins this one!  The windows on the first floor will receive new sashes....so scraping and painting is on the agenda.  They will be painted the same cranberry color as the new windows on the second floor.

Yay!  The roof is on!

Thanks Jeremy and Josh for your hard work today!

Basement....

Basement

Basement....I like the decent size windows.  Tomorrow....pouring the floor!

We didn't find one rock of any size during the digging of the basement....however this rock was dug up when the sewer line was dug this week.  On top of the rock is a carpenter's pencil.  (I don't want to hear about not realizing the scale.....hee hee hee!)

Alan will build stairs to the basement to the left of the ladder.

Driveway and Garage; south side of the house

We like trailers!

East side of house and Alan

North side of house and Brother Tom

North side of house; there will be a window between the two dormers as well.

North side; trying to decide on steps.....

Our neighbor's house and our house-I think they look nice next to one another!

West side of the house....

Front porch; the wood around the openings was just for support; that can be removed now.

Closer look at shingles.
